UIDAI simplifies Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC

As seen in our previous post, to protect Aadhaar-based e-KYC Authentication Agencies (AUAs, KUAs and Sub-AUAs) from the adverse effects of the Hon. Supreme Court’s Aadhaar verdict, UIDAI promptly rolled out a mechanism for Aadhaar-based Offline KYC and made it available to public / private enterprises for ensuring seamless e-KYC of the end-users through a paperless and automated process.

As you must be aware, at present UIDAI supports Aadhaar-based Offline e-KYC through two instruments – e-Aadhaar and Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC (XML).

The process for Offline e-KYC authentication using both these instruments was almost the same – an Aadhaar holder had to visit the UIDAI portal and download his / her e-Aadhaar or Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC (XML) document by sharing the below 4 details:

  1. Aadhaar Number / VID / Enrolment ID
  2. Name (as per the Aadhaar records)
  3. Residential Address PIN Code (as per the Aadhaar records)
  4. OTP, and
  5. Captcha Code (3 different Captcha code verifications on 3 different pages).

However, to download the Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC (XML) instrument, an Aadhaar holder was also required to create a Share Code (minimum 8 alphanumeric characters) apart from the above-mentioned 5 details.

While many enterprises welcomed UIDAI’s move to promptly introduce Offline e-KYC, they concurred that the authentication process initiated by the Aadhaar holder could be further simplified and made user-friendly.

Quickly acting on this feedback, UIDAI has now simplified the Offline e-KYC process for Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC (XML). Under the new process, an Aadhaar holder has to share only the below 4 details on UIDAI’s website to download his / her Aadhaar Paperless Offline e-KYC (XML) document:

  1. Aadhaar Number / VID / Enrolment ID
  2. OTP
  3. Captcha Code (Only 1 Captcha code verification, instead of 3 separate verifications earlier)
  4. Creation of a unique 4 digit / character Share Code (instead of minimum 8 character alphanumeric code earlier).

By adopting a user-centric approach and simplifying the Offline e-KYC authentication process within a short time, UIDAI has once again set a time-to-market benchmark for others.

Kudos!

Regards

Team ECS.
