UIDAI temporarily permits Local AUAs to use Aadhaar Number for OTP-based e-KYC

Through it’s earlier circular on Virtual ID (VID) Implementation, UIDAI had disallowed Local AUAs to use Aadhaar Number for OTP-based e-KYC authentications. As per this circular, Local AUAs were allowed to perform OTP-based e-KYC authentications using VID only.

However, after multiple requests from various Authentication Agencies, we have learnt that UIDAI has now relaxed it’s earlier mandate and permitted Local AUAs to use Aadhaar Number for OTP-based e-KYC authentications until further communication.

While this is definitely a welcome move from UIDAI, AUAs (both Global as well as Local) should note that their e-KYC application should be equipped to perform authentications (including OTP-based authentication) using both the Aadhaar Number and the VID.
