In our previous blog post on Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID), we covered the basics of the Aadhaar VID, along with a detailed Authentication Transaction Process Flow of how user authentication will take place at the back-end for such VIDs.
In this post, we are presenting a simple 2-step guide to create your Aadhaar VID. But before that, let us clear the below misconceptions people have about Aadhaar VID:
Busted! Misconception 1 – Multiple Aadhaar Virtual IDs can be created simultaneously:
Many people with whom we have interacted think that multiple Aadhaar VIDs can be created simultaneously and shared individually with different Authenticating Agencies. For e.g. a separate Aadhaar VID for e-KYC of new Mobile connection, another one for linking their Bank A/c to their Aadhaar Number, etc.
This is far from the truth! We would like to categorically inform all our readers that multiple Aadhaar Virtual IDs cannot be created simultaneously! While an Aadhaar holder can definitely create as many VIDs as he wants through UIDAI’s portal, only one Aadhaar VID can be created within a span of 24 hours. Which means, that if you create one VID today, you can create a new VID only the next day and not before that.
Busted! Misconception 2 – All VIDs will stay active in UIDAI’s database:
As mentioned above, only one Aadhaar VID can be created per day. When a new VID is created after 24 hours, the new VID automatically replaces the previous VID and all old VIDs simply cease to exist from UIDAI’s database.
Busted! Misconception 3 – Authenticating Agencies have to store VIDs along with the e-KYC Transaction Logs:
This is another misconception amongst many Authenticating Agencies – they believe that they are required to store all the VIDs in their records to ensure transaction-wise traceability at a later date.
We would like to clarify that Authenticating Agencies are not required to store any VIDs in their records since VIDs are temporary in nature. Storing VIDs will be a futile exercise as UIDAI will not be maintaining the data of historic VIDs and the corresponding transactions executed using these Aadhaar VIDs.
When an Aadhaar holder shares his Aadhaar VID with an Authenticating Agency, UIDAI will send an agency-specific UID Number for that particular Aadhaar Number, and the Authenticating Agency is required to store only this UID Number along with the Transaction ID generated by UIDAI and the ASA / KSA.
Now that we are done busting the various myths surrounding Aadhaar VIDs, let’s see how you can create a VID for yourself. Let’s begin:
Step 1: Visit the Virtual ID Generator Page on UIDAI’s website, and you’ll see the below screen:
Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar Number, the Security (CAPTCHA) Code and click the ‘Send OTP’ button. Enter the OTP received on your mobile number registered with UIDAI when you enrolled for your Aadhaar Number, and voila! You’ll see the below screen and receive a 16-digit temporary number (the Aadhaar VID) on your registered mobile number.
That’s all folks! Hope we were able to bust the common misconceptions about Aadhaar VID. Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any queries about Aadhaar Virtual ID, or just want to say hi ?
